PART-TIME PROGRAM ASSISTANT

Accountability: Program Leader
Job Purpose: Assist the Program Leader with assigned duties in a part-time capacity.
Qualifications:

  • Be a minimum of 16 years old.
  • Have an interest and commitment in working with individuals with disabilities.
  • Have a basic knowledge and understanding of recreation programming.
  • Ability to work effectively with staff and individuals with a disability.
  • Highly motivated and enthusiastic in order to provide a quality experience for those participating in the program(s).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Follow directions of the Program Leader and carryout such instructions in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Communicate regularly with FVSRA Program Leaders regarding any program- related concerns. Direct any questions to the Program Leader.
  • Arrive at program site 15 minutes prior to scheduled activity. Be prepared to stay after program is finished to help with cleanup.
  • Follow FVSRA’s dress code policy.
  • Assist with the supervision of participants of varying ages in any of our programs. Encourage them to participate in activities and promote appropriate interactions.
  • At times be responsible for a small group of participants. Be aware of their dietary needs, medication, allergies, seizures, behavioral management needs, and daily living skills.
  • Upon request, be willing to assist participants who may need one-on-one assistance.
  • Help with personal tasks and daily living skills.
  • Assist with supplies and equipment, where needed. Take initiative to help program leader with program preparations such as set up, greet parents and participants, collect lunches, decorate for an event, and serve refreshments.
  • Assist with the pushing of individuals in wheelchairs. Assist with the loading and unloading of individuals in wheelchairs in and out of the vans.
  • Attend meetings, in-services, and orientations relating to FVSRA.
  • Be aware of and practice the safety policies as indicated by the FVSRA loss control program.

Psychological Considerations:

  • Must be able to respond to needs of individuals with disabilities.
  • Must be able to work under stressful situations.
  • Must demonstrate adequate leadership qualities for an assigned group of participants.

VAN DRIVER

Accountability: Support Staff & Volunteer Coordinator
Job Purpose: To provide scheduled program transportation from pick-up and drop-off locations and also door-to-door transportation within our member park district communities. To assist the Program Leader with assigned duties during general programs and special events.
Qualifications:

  • Have a basic knowledge and understanding of recreation programming for individuals with disabilities.
  • Have a valid Illinois Driver’s License.
  • Ability to provide a current Illinois Driver’s abstract.
  • Ability to work effectively with Association staff and individuals who have a disability or need special recreation assistance.
  • Highly motivated and enthusiastic in order to provide a quality experience for those participating in the program(s).
  • Highly committed to providing a timely and safe transportation service to FVSRA participants.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Will adhere to program assignment schedule/transportation schedule determined by the Superintendent.
  • Will follow directions of the Program Leader and carryout such instructions in a safe, and appropriate manner.
  • To assist participants who may require one-on-one assistance.
  • To assist with the supervision of participants of varying ages and abilities in assigned programs.
  • To safely transport participants of varying ages and abilities to and from scheduled and door-to-door pick-up and drop points.
  • To safely load and unload individuals in wheelchairs in and out of vans.
  • Assist with program preparations such as decorating, setting-up, and serving refreshments.
  • To help with personal tasks and daily living skills.
  • To attend meetings, in-services and orientations required by FVSRA.

SUMMER DAY CAMP SITE DIRECTOR

Accountability: Camp Coordinator
Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for specific camp orientation for all counselors. Review camper’s annual information forms with all staff (disability, allergies, medications, seizures, and behaviors).
  • Supervise the day-to-day operation of the Day Camp program.
  • To assist groups when help is needed.
  • To maintain daily attendance records for campers and staff.
  • To make certain all groups are staffed adequately on a daily basis.
  • To make certain camp facilities and equipment are safe and free from hazards.
  • Bring proposals to regroup campers the Camp Coordinator.
  • Provide for the safety of all campers.
  • Sign off on a daily report (completed by Head Counselor) for each camper every day.
  • Complete and return accident reports to the FVSRA office within 24 hours.
  • Keep all campers’ medication in a secure place.
  • Dispense all medication at the designated time.
  • Record number of hours per staff and complete timesheets daily. Turn in timesheets every two weeks to Camp Coordinator.
  • Responsible for daily planning, coordination, and general supervision of staff.
  • Assist campers in the pool on all swim days.
  • Responsible for facilitating team activity-planning meetings each week with Head Counselors. Offer ideas and assist the counselors in preparing activity plans when help is needed.
  • Collect and review all weekly activity plans prepared by head counselors on a weekly basis. Make a copy of plan and give to Camp Coordinator.
  • Manage all staff disciplinary problems in a private manner and report all serious incidents to the Camp Coordinator according to Employee-Conduct Warning and Dismissal Policy.
  • Report severe disciplinary problems pertaining to campers to the Camp Coordinator. Enforce camp discipline guidelines and discipline procedures. Camp Director MUST Make follow-up phone calls to the camper’s parents or guardian to communicate concerns during that day or evening if unavailable to be reached during the day.
  • Responsible for all communication to parents. All calls home will be made by Camp Director and or Camp Coordinator.
  • Conduct staff meetings 3-4 times a week. Meeting should be devoted to functional issues (i.e. field trips, lesson plans) and staff relations.
  • Motivate staff and remain enthusiastic throughout the 8 weeks.
  • Plan 4 field trips and enforce Summer Day Camp Field Trip Policy.
  • Plan, organize, and supervise Family Night for campers and their parents.
  • Maintain all money, receipts, and records for camp funds.
  • Develop and disperse camp newsletters (a minimum of 4 during 8 weeks).
  • Call camper’s home to check on absences if a call is not received. Report information to the Camp Coordinator.
  • Responsible for leaving the camp site clean and organized at the end of each day.
  • Maintain a safe and secure camp environment and experience for campers and staff.
  • Responsible for insuring that all camp and staff evaluations and camper assessments are completed and turned in on schedule.
  • Complete final camp evaluation and turn into Camp Coordinator one week after camp is finished. At this time all money and receipts will be returned.

SUMMER DAY CAMP HEAD COUNSELOR

Accountability: Camp Director
Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Attend the orientation prior to the start of camp.
  • Arrive at campsite 30 minutes prior to camp starting and remain until camp is secure as determined by Camp Director.
  • Keep all personal camp and camper information confidential.
  • Responsible for the safety of the campers in assigned group and their possessions. Make sure that personal property of the campers is labeled and stored properly.
  • Plan, schedule, and lead camp activities. Coordinate these activities with the Camp Director and the other Head Counselors. Responsible for participation in all camp related activities.
  • Attend weekly team activity planning meetings with the Camp Director and other Head counselors. Complete weekly activity plans based on goals for assigned group.
  • Prepare individual goals for each camper assigned to group.
  • Responsible for completing daily reports going home concerning campers performance and or group activity matters, i.e., remember to bring swim suit and towel. Reports are to be turned in to the Camp Director each day so he/she can review and sign off.
  • On swim days, must have suit on and actively participating in water with campers.
  • Supervise campers at times of transportation drop-offs and pick-ups and during swim and field trip transportation. Complete check in and check out form.
  • Supervise campers in locker rooms for dressing needs and in the bathroom if needed.
  • Supervise campers on all field trips.
  • Be flexible in the implementation of your programs. There may be times when you might deviate from the scheduled activity in order to meet the needs of your group.
  • Responsible for proper use of all equipment and returning it to its proper storage space.
  • Responsible for the upkeep of all supplies/equipment and facilities utilized for camp.
  • Attend all scheduled day camp staff meetings or emergency meetings.
  • Maintain an open line of communication with all camp staff. Any problems with campers, staff or camp related issues can be discussed with the Camp Director and/or at staff meetings.
  • Complete evaluations on camp and each assigned camper.
  • Strive to make the camp program a rewarding experience for the campers as well as for yourself.

PROGRAM LEADER

Accountability: Support Staff Coordinator and FVSRA Liaisons
Job Purpose: To assist in the planning, implementing, and leading of FVSRA seasonal recreation programs for adults and children with disabilities, in a fun, safe environment.
Qualifications:

  • Proven experience with children and adults with various disabilities in community recreation or related fields.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of disabling conditions, and experience in planning a wide range of recreation activities.
  • Experience leading and supervising volunteers and part-time staff.
  • Must have good organizational skills, ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people in and out of FVSRA.
  • Must demonstrate dependability, promptness and punctuality.
  • Be a team leader, promoting group cohesiveness.
  • Demonstrate a professional attitude when working with staff, parents and community contacts.
  • Be safety conscious.
  • Good oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • Must be 21 years of age and have completed FVSRA van orientation.

Duties:

  • Implement and evaluate seasonal recreation programs and special events, as assigned.
  • Assist in communication of opportunities available at FVSRA and the FVSRA philosophy to participants, parents, and other professionals.
  • Lead programs in areas assigned, and assist in preparing part-time staff and volunteers working in the assigned areas.
  • Prepare and implement behavior management strategies when necessary, to ensure safe involvement in recreation programs by people with disabilities.
  • Supervise part-time staff and volunteers assigned to work in programs or events.
  • Develop skills and abilities necessary to carry out assigned duties by attending meetings, in-service training programs and other opportunities, when scheduled.
  • Drive agency vehicles and transport program participants, as required, and assist in care and maintenance of FVSRA vehicles as required.
  • Adhere to FVSRA safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain constant communication and quality customer service toward parents, staff, participants and the general public, as a representative of FVSRA.
  • Demonstrate creativity, enthusiasm, and take initiative.
  • Responsible for collecting and turning in receipts from program expenses in a timely fashion.
  • Responsible for record keeping such as attendance sheets, as well as incident and accident reporting forms.
  • Provide assistance and instruction to the participants when needed.
  • Complete all weekly and daily paperwork and documentation as assigned by your supervisor.
  • Report any problems or concerns to the Superintendent of Recreation and FVSRA Liaisons.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Essential Functions:
The Program Leader must, with or without reasonable accommodations, be able to perform the following functions:

  • Understand needs of persons with disabilities and adapt activities to enable participation;
  • Communicate effectively with individuals, and large and small groups of people;
  • Receive and understand written materials, whether by mail, facsimile, or email;
  • Solve moderately complex problems regarding the use of program supplies and materials by participants, behaviors, and facility use;
  • Solve complex problems arising from the supervision of part-time employees and volunteers;
  • Lift and carry as much as 75 pounds for as long as 300 feet;
  • Push one adult in a wheelchair for as long a distance as 200 yards;
  • Go to and from designated points in a program site quickly and without hesitation;
  • Communicate and interact effectively with supervisors, partner agency staff, emergency service personnel, other seasonal employees, volunteers, participants, and families; and
  • Work efficiently and effectively under pressure such as deadlines or emergencies.

Hours:

  • The work schedule varies from approximately 5 – 30 hours per week during an 8 – 12 week program season, based on skills and experience of Program Leader. Part-time employee program schedule may be altered due to low or high program enrollment.

Pay Rate:

  • Salary is determined by previous experience and years in school and responsibility of the position. Employees are responsible for completing their own time sheets.
