Adult Theatre Group

Take your pick and join FVSRA as we visit several theatres to watch various productions put on by very talented casts. The goal of this program is to increase socialization and cultural awareness of the arts. (3 sessions)

Afternoon at the Movies

Calling all movie goers! Grab some popcorn, pick the perfect seat and enjoy the show. The goal of this program is to work on independence skills and money handling while socializing with your peers. (3 weeks)

Aktion Club

“To serve the community and develop initiative and leadership skills.”

Join the over 30 members of the growing group and help serve the community. The Aktion Club is an international program sup¬ported by the 600,000 members of Kiwanis International. This Club was the first in the state of Illinois and now other groups have followed in their footsteps. The Aurora Kiwanis and FVSRA cosponsor this organization. Aktion Club members will participate in bimonthly meetings, one being a business meeting and the second being a community service project.

Assisted Horseback Riding

This new and exciting program will introduce participants to horses, the basics of horseback riding, and the benefits of riding. A 1:1 staff ratio will be provided. Horseback riding gently and rhythmically moves the rider’s body in a manner similar to a human gait. Riders with physical disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance and muscle strength. The unique relationship formed with the horse can lead to increased confidence, patience and self-esteem. Please note this is not a therapeutic riding program, but the benefits received from the program are therapeutic in nature. (6 weeks)

Bingo Night North

B-I-N-G-O, Bingo! Join us for game night and try your luck at winning a prize. Socialize with friends and enjoy some good, classic fun! The goal of the program is to practice recognition of letters and numbers and increase overall independence. (4 weeks)

Bleacher Bums

Cheer on local high school teams with your FVSRA friends. We will attend hockey, volleyball, soccer and baseball games. The louder we cheer the better they play. During this program, there will be plenty of socialization opportunities.

Cinema Cruisers Central

Enjoy the company of good friends while relaxing and watching the latest new releases on the big screen. The goal of this program is to practice daily life skills such as money handling, etiquette, and social awareness. (4 sessions)

Cooking Connection

Learn some kitchen basics. You will chop, measure, and stir your way to a variety of healthy dishes. Work on your independence in the kitchen while socializing and working as a team. Each week participants will enjoy the recipes they created for dinner. The goal of this program is to develop independent cooking skills. (6 weeks)

Creative Crafters

Explore your creative side! In addition to our regular craft program, we are incorporating photography so that you may create your own scrapbook! Participants will create projects in which they can take home and share with friends and family at the end of the program! The goal of this program is to utilize fine motor skills, learn new mediums to express yourself, and to practice following directions as well as following a series of steps. (6 weeks)

Culinary Creations

Calling all experienced cooks! FVSRA has joined kitchens with a renowned chef to teach you the ins and outs of the kitchen and more advanced dishes. The goal of this program is to build your indepen¬dence by taking your culinary skills to the next level. Each week you will prepare and enjoy a different meal. (4 weeks)

FVSRA Superstars

Cheer on the FVSRA Stars! We are the official pep squad so bring your loud voices and be ready to cheer. Each Super Star will receive a t-shirt that can be worn to all the games. The goal of the program is to help support and watch our friends who play Special Olympic sports, while socializing. (10 weeks)

Gone Fishin'

Grab your pail, pole and tackle box! We will be hitting up local fishing spots to see what we can catch! Participants will be fishing with a “Catch & Release” method. You will gain knowledge in the sport of fishing through instruction from the staff. Learn how to use the correct approach and bait for the fish you are reeling in. (3 weeks)

Indoor Golf Skills

Although we can’t be outside, we can still play the beloved sport of golf at the Vaughan Athletic Center! The goal of the program is to learn a basic golf swing, and learn proper golf etiquette.

Ladies Day Out

This program is all about the ladies! Get your hair and nails done, see a romantic comedy and spend time hanging out and gossiping with your girlfriends! The goal of this program is to build positive relationships with peers and build socializations skills.

Lunch Bunch

Visit with friends over lunch. We travel to our surrounding communities to try out different tastes and gossip about the latest news.

Movie Night

Grab your popcorn and enjoy a movie right here at FVSRA! Popcorn and juice will be provided, but feel free to bring your own favorite movie snacks. This is a great way to enjoy a movie for less money in the current economic climate. The main goal of the program is to practice proper behaviors and etiquette as if we were in a real theater! (4 weeks)

Movin' and Groovin'

It’s time to pump up that old workout routine and get your blood “Movin” and your body “Groovin.” This low impact class will combine step aerobics, light weightlifting, dance moves, walking and use of the fitness equipment in the fitness center. The goal of this program is to increase physical activity, take muscles and joints through the full range of motion and promote a healthy lifestyle. (11 weeks)

Reconnect with Nature

Be one with nature! Enjoy the outdoors through creating natural crafts, walking area trails, sledding, hiking and playing outdoor games while learning about the history of the communities we live in. The goal of this program is to learn how to respect nature, work on creativity, physical activity, motor skills and socialization. (8 weeks)

Restaurant Reviewers North

The goal of the program is to work on money management and improve social skills by using appropriate dining etiquette while meeting new friends and enjoying great meals. (5 sessions)

Restaurant Reviewers South

Rollin the Night Away

Visit Funway Entertainment Center for a night of roller skating. The goal of this program is to socialize with friends, learn a new skill and get some exercise. (4 weeks)

Saturday Bowl

Bowling is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Bowl with us on Saturdays and develop your bowling skills and socialize with friends. Bowlers will bowl two games each week to work on their form, approach, and release. (10 weeks)

Shop Til' You Drop

Let us help you get your weekly errands completed. We will shop at local stores such as Wal-Mart, Dollar Tree, Target, JC Penny and many more. Don’t forget your shopping list and money. The goal of this program is to practice money han¬dling, budgeting, and problem solving while running weekly errands. (5 weeks)

Sit and Get Fit

Find your way into the fitness studio for an energetic hour of fun and fitness. This seat¬ed workout will help strengthen and tone your upper body. No chair, no problem! Even if you do not use a wheelchair, you are welcome to take a seat and participate in this low-impact workout! All you need to do is Sit and Get Fit! The goal of this program is to improve muscular strength, tone and flexibility, and increase weekly physical activity. (8 weeks)

Skills and Drills - Sports

If you’re looking to try a new sport without the pressure of competition, then Skills and Drills is for you! The goal of the program is to practice the basic fundamentals, learn the rules of each sport through increased repetition.

Skills and Drills - Swim

Can’t wait until the swim team season starts next year? Join one of our swim instructors in a small group setting to stay in shape, perfect your swim stroke, and work on improving your times for the next Special Olympic Swim Season. This program compliments the Special Olympics Swim Team.

Star Search Practice

Looking for a chance to show off your many talents? Bring your singing and dancing skills, comedy routines, your magic tricks and get ready for the show! This is a great opportunity to get some extra practice so you can be ready for Drama Club and Swing Choir next season! The practices will help you prepare for the Star Search Talent Show on May 21st. The goal of this program is to increase confidence in front of others, showcase your talents, and to express yourself in a positive way through the arts.

Team Knit

Knitting and crocheting are creative fun outlets you can do for a lifetime. It makes no difference if you are a novice or a seasoned veteran, this class will teach you the basics and provide challenges for those who have experience! You will have a great time while learning the basics of knitting and crocheting! The goal of this program is to learn a lifetime skill that can help increase your fine motor skills and hand eye coordination. (5 weeks)

Treasure Hunt Hikers

The goal of the program is to get out into our community and learn more about local areas while still getting a little work out. We will adventure through nature centers, visit local parks and stroll a few river walks. A scavenger hunt will be incorporated into each of the community outings. (4 weeks)

Water Aerobics

Make a splash with this mid week water workout! Whether you’re an early bird or enjoy sleeping in we’ve got the class to ensure you get a great workout. The morning session will be at the Keeler Center Pool and will be a great way to start your workday. The afternoon session will be our traditional class in the heated therapy pool at the Vaughan Athletic Center. The goal of this program is to improve muscle tone, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance while socializing with your friends. This program is ideal for those who would like a great workout without the wear and tear on their joints.

Walking Club North

Stay fit this winter by moving your fall workout indoors. You will walk twice a week for an hour and track your steps. Socialize with friends while boosting your cardiovascular system at the same time. The goal of this program is to participate in a low impact workout while increasing overall health and wellness.

Young Adult Spring Break Mini Camp

Take a break from school to socialize with new and old friends. Spring Break Mini Camp gives you a chance to show your athletic side, inspire your creativity and explore your sense of adventure. We will play sports and games, create arts and crafts, dive deep into swimming and venture into the community for field trips including movies, bowling and visiting neighborhood playgrounds! (4 days)
