Physical Disabilities & Visual Impairments

The Fox Valley Special Recreation Association offers a variety of programs for those with Physical Disabilities & Visual Impairments. Please select a program for more details.

Paralympic sports are designed for individuals with a primary visual impairment or physical disability. Sports and programs offered for this specific group will teach the basic fundamentals of sports and promote a healthy and active lifestyle. Participants will gain confidence, exceed personal goals and meet new friends. NEW Paralympic Tennis (Age: 6 and older)

Paralympic Tennis is played on a standard tennis court and follows many of the same rules as tennis. This program is designed to work on individual tennis skills including; forearm, back hand, volleying, serving, and positioning on the court. The goal of the program is to try a new leisure activity and work on gross motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Eligible athletes must have a primary physical disability, but can be either ambulatory or use an assistive device. (13 sessions)

NEW Paralympic Sunshine Through Golf
(Age: 6 and older)

The golf pros at Fox Bend Golf Course in Oswego are ready to teach you the basics of golf. This program will provide each participant individualized attention and skill building. The goal of the program is to improve basic golf skills. This program is designed for individuals with a primary visual impairment or physical disability. Athletes can be ambulatory or use an assistive device. (5 weeks)

Adapted Water Skiing (Age: 6 and older)

Enjoy a day in the sun and on the water. We are taking a trip to Libertyville to test our skills in adaptive water skiing. No experience is necessary and skies are available for all ability levels. This program is offered in cooperation with Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association.

Sit and Get Fit (Age: 20 and older)

Wheel your way into the fitness studio for an energetic hour of fun and fitness. This seated workout will help strengthen and tone your upper body. No chair, no problem! Even if you do not use a wheelchair, you are welcome to take a seat and participate in this low-impact workout! All you need to do is Sit and Get Fit! The goal of this program is to improve muscular strength, tone and flexibility, and increase weekly physical activity.

Aquatic Fitness (Age: 18 and older)

Jumpstart your morning with an invigorating swim in the warm waters of the 92 degree therapy pool. This program is for early risers who may have back pain, reduced range of motion, limited mobility, arthritis, a physical disability or anyone who would like the motivation and direction of a structured aquatic class. We will do low impact exercise and stretches to improve flexibility and muscle tone as well as some cardio to raise that heart rate. The goal of this class is to provide a motivating workout and help keep off those extra pounds.

Wheelchair Softball (Age: 6 and older)

Eligible athletes must have a primary physical disability, but can be either ambulatory or use an assistive device.
(6 weeks)

Bowling (Age: 18 and older)

Hit the lanes and bowl with FVSRA friends and staff. All levels of bowlers are welcome! Whether your goal is to learn a new skill or perfect an old one, come out and enjoy the day with us. The goal of the program is to work on your gross motor skills and hand-eye coordination, and socialize with friends. FVSRA will have adaptive ramps available if necessary. (3 weeks)

Visual Impairment Support Group (Age: All ages)

The Fox Valley Support Group for individuals with visual impairments/blindness meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month depending on the availability of the group. The group changes the location regularly between the Prisco Community Center in Aurora, a local restaurant, or local recreation facility. The goal of the support group is to learn and gather support from one another, as well as to find out about resources concerning visual aids and other devices. (3 weeks)

NEW All About Fridays (Age: 6 and older)

There is nothing like enjoying a warm summer day on the town and socializing with friends. We will be doing a variety of different activities throughout the summer including a movie on the big screen, grabbing a bite to eat or trying new leisure activities.
